There is also a boat trip on a replica of the old heavy gabares (flat bottomed boats).

These used to be loaded with stones from Saint Même les Carrières or weapons made in Ruelle or eaux-de-vie from Cognac, used to go down the Charente river to the sea from where they returned loaded with salt from Brouage or the Ile de Ré.

Trips are available from May-Sept along the Charente and are approximately 1hr 45 minutes.

Fishing

The Charente is very clean and unpolluted and has many different types of fish waiting to be caught. The local record being 42kg for carp and 60kg for catfish.

Anyone can fish but a fishing permit is required which can be bought for per day, week, month or the year.

Cognac visits

There are three well known Cognac manufacturers in Jarnac, Courvoisier, Hine and Braastad.

Each can be visited, and offer multi-lingual tours with the oppurtunity to taste some of the delights produced and purchase souvenirs.

Ten minutes further afield from Jarnac, is Cognac, which is home to Hennessey, Remy Martin, Martell and Otard amongst others, which equally have their own tours.

All Cognac houses are open all year round but some are only by appointment in the low season.
